Men’s Book Club in June
Five members attended our June 17 meeting.
New developments
Ron Commander has agreed to replace Bo who is retiring after many years of heading up our group. Our many thanks to Bo for your efforts on our behalf for 12 years, your efforts are greatly appreciated!
And Thanks Ron for doing this.
We discussed our need to add members to our club.
This time we discussed two books:
“Freezing Order“ by Bill Browder
This is the second book by Bill that we have read. Most people thought that his first book was a better read. Freezing Order was easy to read and well written as well. Discussion centred on the depth that Putin’s Russia has invaded the US legal system. The average mark 7.2
Second book was “Clearing the Plains” by James Daschuk.
The reason for Doug recommending this book was he felt there was a need to clarify some of the positions taken by Patrice Dutil in the book “Sir John A Macdonald” which we read in April. Sir John A was not only the Prime Minister of Canada, he was also the minster in Charge of Indian Affairs. Dutil’s book attempted to justify some of the actions of the Department during 1885 with regard to helping Indians with food during some of the crop failures of that year. Daschuk takes the Department to task for their failures in Administration, and gives many examples. Some members thought that the book could have been improved from a writing standpoint but the average mark was 7.3
