Deep Bay Research Station

On May 21st 15 Probus members gathered for a private tour at the VIU Deep Bay Research Station. Our very knowledgeable guide Marnie walked us through the facility and explained the purpose and process of the research being done.

Their focus is on sustainable oyster farming, and how to help oysters adapt to changing sea conditions. We visited the lab where various types of algae are grown and learned about how they affect the oysters’ growth. We then saw the oyster nursery, where different types of oysters are raised.

We had a brief overview of whales (they have a complete skeleton on display) and how they feed. There were multiple examples of baleen that we were able to examine. We finished the tour at the hands-one tide pool where we were able to touch and hold starfish, anemones, sea cucumbers and other creatures. After the tour we reconvened at the Ship and Shore restaurant where we enjoyed good food and even better company.
