Wee Drammers Welcome Spring

The Wee Drammers gathered at Dick D’s. on the 25th to sample another 2 of Scotland’s finest, enjoy some great appies and engage in excited conversation.  The 2 drams represent numbers 186 and 187 on our 9 year quest.

First up on this occasion was a surprising offering from Talisker, an 8 year-old which is a recent addition to the Talisker range.   Talisker 8 Year-Old offers  a younger, more vibrant take on the iconic Isle of Skye distillery’s single malts. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect from this whisky:

The Talisker 8 Year Old usually has a deep golden color, typical of the whisky’s age and cask influences.

  • Nose: The nose is rich and smoky, with the signature Talisker peat smoke coming through strong. Underneath the smoke, there are hints of fruitiness — mostly citrus and apple — along with some light malt sweetness and a touch of vanilla.
  • Palate: The Talisker 8 Year-Old is powerful and intense. With peat smoke being prominent, but not overwhelming the other flavors. Think fresh citrus, green apples, and maybe even a bit of pear. There’s also a peppery spice, a signature of Talisker. The mouthfeel is slightly oily but smooth enough to carry the flavors well.
  • Finish: The finish is long and warming, with lingering smoke, salt, and a bit of a peppery kick. “It has that classic Talisker “coastal” feel, leaving you with a satisfying, peaty aftertaste”.

Most agree the Talisker 8 Year-Old is a very enjoyable dram, offering the signature smoky, maritime elements of Talisker while also showcasing the youthful energy and vibrant flavours associated with a younger whisky. It’s a great choice for anyone who enjoys peaty whiskies, especially those with a coastal, briny edge.

For the price point ($120.00 before taxes at BCLB outlets), it offers excellent value for whisky lovers who are seeking that distinctive Talisker experience without splurging on a more expensive bottle.
ABV – a whopping 58.7% – be careful!

Dick’s second choice for the evening was the Glen Garioch 2011, bottled under The Cooper’s Choice label by The Vintage Malt Whisky Co Ltd., a dram that has garnered positive reviews from whisky enthusiasts. One of only 180 bottles under this label, Cooper’s Choice has been matured for 9 years and bottled at 53.5% ABV.  It has received an average rating of 84.9 out of 100 based on 27 user reviews on Whiskybase.

Tasting notes:

  • NOSE: initial aromas of sweet meringue, toffee, and fresh fruit.
  • PALATE: a gradual development of flavors, including pepper, raisins, praline, and a slight acidity reminiscent of lemon.
  • FINISH: characterized by a lingering warmth and a touch of wood tannins.

These reviews suggest that the Glen Garioch 2011 provides a satisfying experience for whisky enthusiasts, combining rich flavors with a robust alcohol content.

Available at the Landing in Nanaimo at $135.00 plus taxes

Dick’s selection of appies included smoked sausage, shrimp with sauce, smoked salmon, a variety of cheeses and crackers, green olives, grapes, and of course, dark chocolate.  All were delicious!

Another great evening with good whisky and food and great company.  Thanks Dick!
