Book Club 2nd Edition

In November, we met at Anne Larson’s house to discuss the book “At a Loss for Words: Conversations in an Age of Rage” by CBC’s own Carol Off. In this book, Off dissects six different words beginning with their origin and historical meaning and progressing to what they have come to mean in our current state. The words are: Freedom, Democracy, Truth, Woke, Choice, and Taxes. With these six words, Off covers much of the current political scene, particularly in Canada and the US, as well as economics and social justice. As Canadians, we appreciated this book because we are hugely affected by our American neighbours but also want to know what Canada is doing and how we might be similar or different. So much of our Canadian identity exists in simply being “not Americans” and yet there is danger in that complacency. As you can imagine there was lots to talk about and digest.
