Wee Drammers Back At It For 2025

It was never the intent of the WeeDrammers to attend to the trend of ‘dry’ January.  However, circumstances did make a January get-together not possible.  So, our first meeting for 2025 was held in late February, hosted by Bill H.  7 members gathered at Bill’s to sample numbers 184 and 185 on our continuing quest. Bill’s selections were both excellent.

First up on this occasion was a very pleasant discover, the Glenturret 12 year old released in 2022.

Glenturret claims to be the oldest working distillery in Scotland, distilling in 1770 but not licensed until 1818 when the name Glenturret was adopted.

Glenturret 12 Year Old Single Malt is an inviting whisky that showcases the charm and heritage of one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, located in the picturesque heart of the Highlands. Known for its handcrafted approach and commitment to quality, Glenturret presents a whisky that is both approachable and complex.

Matured in a combination of American and European oak, its the 2021 release of 12 year old single malt from The Glenturret Distillery! An indulgent balance of spiced fruits and creamy vanilla, balanced by rich, oily oak make it a splendid sipper.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

  • Nose Oily barley and toasted nuts mingle with sweet raisins, a whiff of malt loaf, and vanilla cream.
  • Palate Warming ginger, juicy sultanas with dustings of cinnamon, spiced apple crumble and zesty oak.
  • Finish Toasty oak char, dry cakey spice with a silky, creamy texture.

Overall Impression: Glenturret 12 Year Old is a well-crafted single. It is a delightful whisky that embodies the spirit of traditional Scotch whisky-making while remaining accessible to all; an excellent choice for both newcomers and seasoned whisky enthusiasts. The balance of fruitiness, sweetness, and spice, along with its smooth texture, creates a pleasing tasting experience that does not overwhelm.

Bill’s second choice was the Highland Park 16 Year Old Twisted Tattoo a limited edition release from the renowned Highland Park distillery, located in Orkney, Scotland. Known for their balanced and complex whiskies,

Highland Park has crafted a unique expression with the Twisted Tattoo, which builds on the classic characteristics of the distillery while incorporating intriguing new flavors.  It combines whisky aged in Spanish Rioja wine seasoned casks with whisky aged in first-fill bourbon casks. The Inspiration for this dram came from the Viking legend of the Midgard Serpent, which got itself twisted around the world to bite its own tail. You can even see said serpent on the bottle’s label, designed by tattoo artist Colin Dale.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

  • Nose Roasted red berries, shortbread, a whiff of sea spray.
  • Palate Peppery malt, orange oil, vanilla, cut grass, blueberry muffin and buttered malt loaf.
  • Finish Boozy red wine tannins and soft smoke.

Overall Impression: Highland Park 16 Year Old Twisted Tattoo is a fantastic expression that highlights the distillery’s craftsmanship and tradition while incorporating creative elements. It’s suitable for both seasoned whisky drinkers and newcomers alike, offering complexity without overwhelming the palate. The unique bottle design inspired by tattoo art adds an enticing visual element, making it a collectible for whisky enthusiasts. Whether enjoyed neat or with a drop of water, this whisky promises a rewarding tasting experience.

In summary, Highland Park 16 Year Old Twisted Tattoo is a harmonious blend of sweetness, spice, and smoky undertones that reflects the rich heritage of the distillery while presenting something fresh and new. It’s a must-try for any whisky lover looking to explore the depth and nuances of Highland Park’s offerings.
