WeeDrammers – Two weeks late but great nonetheless!

9 “Drammers” gathered at Dick D’s on March 12 to sample #’s 163 and 164 of Scotland’s finest.  In this case both drams required leaving BC to secure.  In fact, one would require an international flight; the other a visit to our neighbour to the east. Regardless, Dick’s selections were both well received indeed.

First up, a Highland dram, the Dalmore Trio, came to us via Heathrow’s Duty Free at 40% ABV and a price of approx. $140.00 Cdn. for a 1 litre bottle.  After initially maturing in ex-bourbon casks, the single malt was divided between a combination of more first-fill ex-bourbon casks, tawny Port pipes, and Matusalem sherry casks, before coming together again in this delicious harmony. Available in a 1litre bottle, here are the tasting notes from  Masters of Malt

  • Nose Heaps of tangy, zesty fruit with notes of dried cranberry, orange peel, and cherry chocolate.
  • Palate Still fruity with dark berry compote and stewed plums. Hints of leathery oak creep in, with creamy barley and buttered shortbread.
  • Finish A touch of woody anise and clove are balanced by silken caramel, rounded off with plenty of oaken vanilla.

Wonderful!

Dick’s second selection came via Costco in Calgary. The Devron 18 Yr. Old comes in at 40% ABV and is priced in Alberta at approx. $108. Only the 12 year is available in BCLS. The 18 ‘may’ be found in private liquor stores.

Launched in September 2015, this Highland whisky is described in these terms by the folks at Master of Malt.

  • Nose Creamy malt with hints of hazelnut cream, fresh summer berries and a drizzle of maple syrup.
  • Palate Caramelized peaches, dark chocolates, orange zest and malt aplenty.
  • Finish Whispers of raisin and crushed nuts. A bit short.

Another good choice for the WeeDrammers to enjoy

MeatBalls, sausage courtesy of Nesvog’s, smoked salmon (two varieties) a variety of cheese and crackers, grapes and of course the obligatory dark chocolate accompanied the drams.

Thanks Dick!  Another fine tasting!

Now, the good news! There will be another tasting in March.  On the 26th, Tony R. will host our regular get together for the month.
