MOTO Members Enjoy Tulips

Day one we drove the scenic route from Fairhaven down Chuckanut Drive to Skagit Valley, stopping off at Larrabee park and then Chuckanut Manor for a late lunch, later returning not only for dinner but to enjoy it’s ocean views and the sunset.

Our final stop was Tulip Valley farms where one of us picked an armful of beautiful tulips. Next day we explored Tulip Town riding around the fields in a wagon before driving onto Roozengaarde farm with its stunning gardens of Spring flowers in full bloom and extensive tulip fields. Later we lunched in La Conner and meandered around the unique shops, where some of us even purchased furniture! The final day, after breakfasting at the Bellwether Inn in Fairhaven, was spent on a little shopping therapy at Trader Joes for wine and cheese and Bellis Fair. Safely over the border with our very laden car, our final stop was enjoying some refreshments in the sunshine at White Rock Beach before heading to the ferry (oh and a quick stop at Tsawwassen Mills for shoes)!  Weather perfect, flowers at their peak and good company, it was a very enjoyable trip.

ABBA Members Enjoy Games Night

Two groups of ABBA members enjoyed several different games on April 16th.
Darrell Robertson and Wendy Hayes welcomed Don and Sharon Jackson, Alida and Pat Sali and Anne and Erling Larson to their home for an enjoyable evening of Mexican Train and Whist.  Hosting ABBA gave us a chance to get to know members better while introducing variations to the chosen games.

The Beazleys and Sadlers joined the Nelsons at their home for “Cards and Marbles” (think Sorry!), and all had a great time.

April BYOB Books

Another interesting gathering and as usual, common themes emerged in the book discussions.  This month’s books featured plots that unfolded around dysfunctional, imperfect family relationships, secrets and misunderstandings.  From one book cover: “What you don’t know CAN hurt you.”

Les Wineaux Experience “The French Connection”

32 Les Wineaux members enjoyed a wine-pairing dinner at the Fairwinds Golf Course on Saturday, March 23, featuring wines from Roche Wines.  The winery is in the Okanagan, but the owners have a long history of wine making in France.  The evening started with Prosecco and a small appetizer as we mingled.   We were then seated for a 5-course dinner, each course with a separate wine.

Two particularly outstanding pairings were the Gamay 2022 with the Beef Tartare and the Chateau 2018 (a full-bodied red blend) with the Duck a L’orange.  We capped the meal with a delicious chocolate mousse. Many thanks to Ron Commander for stepping in and reading the tasting notes when the sommelier was unable to attend due to illness.  Special thanks also to Sean Wiens and his team for preparing and serving a great meal.

WeeDrammers Look to Tradition

9 Weedrammers gathered at Tony R’s on the 26th of March for our 2nd tasting of the month (February we cancelled). This time, Tony looked to history to find two excellent drams coming from small and more obscure distilleries.  The drams, combined with an excellent selection of appies, made for a great evening!

Tony’s first selection was Edradour 10 year old.  Edradour, world renowned as Scotland’s Little Gem and arguably the most unique distillery in Scotland, dates back to 1825, and stands alone as the last stronghold of handmade single malt whisky from a farm distillery still in production today. Nestled in the Perthshire countryside, this single malt Scotch whisky embodies the essence of craftsmanship and tradition, showcasing the unique character of the Highland region.

  • NOSE – The whisky exhibits a rich amber hue (perhaps to be expected coming from Oloroso casks). The nose reveals layers of complexity, with sweet aromas of honeyed malt intertwined with hints of ripe orchard fruits and subtle floral notes.
  • PALATE – Edradour 10 Year Old delivers a “symphony of flavours that dance across the taste buds”. The initial sip greets with a burst of creamy vanilla, followed by luscious notes of caramel and toffee. These sweet undertones are beautifully balanced by the subtle spiciness of cinnamon and nutmeg, which develop gradually, offering a harmonious contrast. A few of the weedrammers felt that there was a distinct orange flavour in this dram
  • FINISH – velvety smooth, “coating the palate with a luxurious warmth that lingers long after the last sip”,  a testament to the careful maturation process and the quality of the casks used

Edradour 10 Year Old Whisky is a true exemplar of Highland Whisky.  At 40ABV it is available at Cascadia and runs at $110.00

Tony’s 2nd choice was from the Glencadam distillery which is situated in Scotland’s Eastern Highlands. One review concludes, the Glencadam 15 “epitomizes sophistication and refinement, offering a captivating sensory experience that embodies the essence of its terroir”.  Who were we to argue?

Its golden amber hue hints at the depth and complexity that lie within, promising a journey of discovery for the discerning palate.

  • NOSE –   Glencadam 15 Year Old unveils an initial impression of sweet citrus, with notes of ripe oranges and zesty lemon zest intertwining with subtle hints of vanilla and honeyed malt.
  • PALATE –  is treated to a symphony of flavours – creamy toffee and caramel, balanced by a gentle spiciness of cinnamon and nutmeg. Each sip is a revelation, revealing new depths of flavour and nuance that underscore the whisky’s maturity and craftsmanship.
  • FINISH –  lingers long after the last drop has been downed,  a testament to the meticulous aging process and the quality of the casks used. Glencadam 15 Year Old leaves a lasting impression, with a satisfying finish that echoes flavours of citrus, spice, and oak. It’s a whisky that demands to be savoured, whether enjoyed neat or with a splash of water to unlock its full potential.

Glencadam 15 Year Old Whisky is a true Highland gem, showcasing impeccable balance, elegance, and complexity offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Scotland’s whisky-making heritage. Coming in at 46%ABV, this 15 year old is also available at Cascadia and comes in at $160.00

Tony offered a feast of cheese, breads and crackers along with pork tenderloin cooked to perfection, smoked salmon and smoked sausage.  A few smoked oysters, grapes, and the essential rich dark chocolate were present as well.

A great evening!  Thanks Tony.

Our next gathering will be hosted by Borje F. on April 30th.

Members Enjoy Singo

In March, twelve of us went to the Lantzville pub for a “Singo” evening.  It’s like Bingo but with songs played rather than numbers.  Nobody at our table won anything, but Vera showed she had one of the best singing voices there!
