Welcome:
Anne Larson opened the meeting and welcomed the large crowd of members and guests.
Announcements:
Anne thanked Bob and Melba Nelson and their team for handling today’s special set-up and door duties.
Thanks as well to the Catering Crew Bev Watson and Sharon Vincent, for their extra efforts for this meeting.
Minutes:
Jacqui Townsend moved that the Minutes of the General Meeting held on May 20 2016 be approved as circulated on our website. Seconded by Tony Ransom. All were in favour.
Treasurer:
Carolyn Dodd reported on the financial status of the Club. Funds available in the Coastal Community Credit Union accounts are as follows:
- Credit Union Savings Account $3,670.44
- Credit Union Chequing Account $3,378.28
Social Convenor:
Ann Lawson reported on the success of the trip to Stubbs Island on May 21. Eighteen members participated. This event is well worth repeating.
Other up-coming events are:
- Friday July 15: Annual Summer Picnic at Rathtrevor Park, 4:00 PM.
- Friday August 26: Tour of Morning Star Bison Ranch in Cassidy.
- Saturday September 3: Bard on the Beach matinee the Merry Wives of Windsor Ontario OR
- Saturday September 10: Bard on the Beach matinee Romeo and Juliet

Sunshine:
Jacqui Townsend reported that she sent two cards this past month.
Special Interest Groups:
Ron Windrim outlined the group activities for the coming weeks.
- ABBA – will break for the summer and commence again in September.
- Book Club 1 – is meeting on June 21 at Carolyn Collyer’s home – the book is “Us Conductors” by Sean Michaels. Then they are taking a break for the summer.
- Book Club 2 – Is reading “The Cleaner of Chartres” by Sally Vickers and will meet at the home of Kathy Lowe. They are continuing over the summer.
- Both book clubs are full, with more club members interested in joining. It is possible to form a third book club if someone would like to help organize – Contact Judy Miller and/or Ulla Hakanson.
- Book/ DVD exchange – Always on the lookout for new paperback books and DVD’s.
- Afternoon Bridge – Is going great, check the web site.
- Evening Bridge – continues to meet Wednesdays and Saturdays and will continue through the summer
- Afternoon Bridge is taking a break for the summer
- Concert Club & Live Classics – on hiatus until the fall
- Computer Club– Suspended for the summer, will resume the 2nd or 3rd Thursday of September
- Dinner Theatre –The next production is Footloose on July 10th. There are still 10 spots left and sign ups close today. The group will have dinner at the Fox and Hound afterwards. The September show is a Lovely Sunday for Creme Coeur (Tennessee Williams).
- Garden Club – has an outing on June 24 to Streamside Native Plants in Bowser and Anderton Gardens in Comox. There is another outing planned for July to the Northwest Bay Nursery to learn about new plants and drought-resistant plants. Date to be confirmed. Ann Williams is still looking for a replacement to take over the leadership of this group.
- Hiking –There will be a hike in July but the destination is currently undecided.
- Les Wineaux – The sit down meals on May 28 and June 11 were a great success, with the wines receiving high ratings. A winery tour is in the planning stages for September or October.
- Mah Jongg – Meets on Monday afternoons and will continue throughout the summer.
- Men’s Book Club – Members are taking a break over the summer.
- Photography Club – While the club is taking a break over the summer there are two photography outings planned, one on July 21 and one on August 18.
- Walking Group – also taking a break over the summer, walks will resume in September.
- TED Discussion group – This month’s meeting is on June 23. The discussion is “on being wrong” and should be of particular interest to husbands.

Membership:
Alida Sali reported that our membership is full at 181, with 16 people on the wait list and two more applications in process.
Sylvia Haftner was presented with her name badge.
A reminder to look for name badges with red rose stickers and make these new members feel welcome.
COMMUNICATIONS –
Anne Larson reported that the Communications tasks are going well and reminded people to contact Robyn A. or Ron W. is they have any questions or concerns.
Guest Speaker:
Robert Bateman, renowned painter and naturalist, who lives nearby on Saltspring Island, gave a moving presentation on the state of the planet and our role in caring for it. He was introduced by Tony Ransom and thanked by Carolyn Dodd. The Northwest Bay Probus Club joined us for this presentation. Each club made a donation of $100 to the Bateman Foundation. One of the goals of the Foundation is to “challenge the public and society’s leaders to a new dialogue about our relationship with nature through strategic partnerships, research, collaboration and public education.”
Pub Lunch:
at Riso in Lantzville, arranged by Helen Stuart and Jane Juba.
Attendance: 106 Members, and 16 Guests.
Final Announcements:
The Club will be circulating a short survey in the coming days via Survey Monkey. Please complete and submit so that we can continue to meet the needs of the membership. One lucky participant will receive a prize – to be chosen at random from the members who identify themselves at the end of the survey – a bottle of wine from 40 Knots Winery.
Next Management Meeting:
Thursday, August 4 at 10:00 a.m. at the home of Ron Windrim.
Next General Meeting is the Summer Picnic on Friday July 15 at 4 pm at Rathtrevor Beach, Site #2
