Welcome:
Anne Larson in the Chair opened the meeting at 9:15 am.
Members with Guests:
Ulla Hakanson, Jean Candey, and Delores Wiart all introduced guests today. Some have recently moved here and are interested in becoming part of our Club.
Announcements:
Anne thanked Bob & Melba Nelson for the setup and door duties. Thanks go as well to the Catering Crew, Teena & Wayne Newport with Jan and Bill Evans.
Anne also thanked Carol Anne Faulkner for filling in as Kitchen Coordinator to the end of the year. We will need a new Coordinator for next year, so please contact Carol Anne if you would like to volunteer to share your organizing skills.
Anne asked the September Birthday people to stand as a group, so we could wish them all a Happy Birthday.
Minutes:
Judie Taylor moved the Minutes of the General Meeting held August 19, 2016 be approved as circulated on our website. Seconded by Carolyn Dodd. Carried.
Treasurer:
Carolyn Dodd reported the funds available at the CCCU as of Sept. 16, 2016 are:
- High Interest Saving Account $3,672.88
- Chequing Account $3,168.56
Social Convenor:
Ann Lawson reported the tour of the Morning Star Bison Ranch in Cassidy was very successful and the guide/narrator was very interesting. The bison burgers were delicious.
Other upcoming events are:
- Sept. 22 – Morning Star Farm tour of the farm, winery and cheese factory.
- Oct. 20 – Historical Tour from Nanoose Bay northwards to Courtenay, with David Maas as guide and narrator.
- Nov. 23 – Quiz night, jointly with Northwest Bay Probus Club, to be held at the Library beginning at 5 pm. Appys and BYOB.
- Dec. 8 – Christmas Party at Fairwinds. Planning committee meets mid-Oct.

Ann also made the draw from all Survey participants to determine the winner of the prize for completing the survey. And the winners are Barb and Garnet Hunt who received the prize of a $25 gift certificate for BC Liquor Stores.
Sunshine Lady:
Jacqui Townsend reported that no cards had been sent out this month.
Communications:
Ron Windrim reported all is well and running smoothly.
Special Interest Groups:
Ron asked SIG Leaders for info on meetings and activities.
- ABBA – Games nights resume in September at Maureen and David Paterson home.
- Book Club #1 – Sept. 20 at home of Jacquie Townsend. “Red Notice”
- Book Club #2 – Oct. 26 “Me Before You” by JoJo Moyes
- Book Club # 3 – Sign up sheet for possible 3rd Book Club.
- Afternoon Bridge – is going well. New members are welcome. Talk to Violet Ewing
- Evening Bridge – Is also going well. New members are welcome. talk to Toine Rhemtulla
- Coin Collectors – a new group is starting. Talk to Bob Bevis if interested.

- Mahjongg: Meets every Monday at 1:00pm. Ethel Vincent Lambert will organize new members’ involvement in the group.
- Men’s Discussion Group: – Will meet at Perks the first Tuesday of each month at 0900. All are welcome. Just show up.
- Men’s Book Club: – Meeting at Bo Hakanson’s home. “Spy Among Friends”. There is room for some new members.
- Scotch Tasting Club: – Sept. 22 is the Inaugural Meeting at Ransom’s home. Sign up sheet available.
- Photography Club: – View the Club’s photos on the web.
- OpinionaTED: – September 29 at the home of Ann Lawson
- Walking Group – meets each Wednesday morning at Nanoose Place at 0915. All are welcome to join
- Kayaking – interest has been expressed in forming a kayaking group. Check with Bob Nelson for details

Membership:
Anne Larson reported that membership is full at 180 members with a waiting list of 29 people. Anne presented a new member badge to Teena Newport.
Guest Speaker:
Alison Etter, introduced by Steve Koehle, spoke on the topic “Hiking the Desert – Utah and Arizona.” Her presentation began with maps to show us exactly where her photos were taken, and continued with remarkable rock formation images. Her knowledge of how these were shaped over time was extensive, and her passion for this type of hiking showed through. Steve thanked her for answering all our questions after the wonderful presentation.
Club Lunch:
Beefeater Chop House and Grill in Nanaimo, organized by Helen Stuart and Jane Juba. Helen and Jane are looking for other organizer(s) to fill this position in the new year.

Final Announcements:
- Bob Bevis reminded us about the dangers of possibly swallowing a bristle from a barbecue brush. He urged everyone to use another method of cleaning BBQ grills, and to throw away the usual brush.
- Jacqui Townsend told us about an Elder College speaker presentation at Nanoose Place on Sat., Sept. 17 at 10:00 am. titled “Addiction is not You, It’s Your Cage”.
