Welcome:      
Anne Larson in the Chair. Meeting called to order at 9:15 am.


 Members with Guests:
Three guests were introduced; Tina Nicourt and Marureen and Dave Patterson.


 Announcements:

  • Thanks to Bob and Melba Nelson for set-up and door duties.
  • Thanks to the Kitchen Crew: Joanne & Philip Smithwick, and Barb & Patrick Murray.

 Guest Speaker:
Doug Horsman introduced guest speaker, Christine McCauley of Bernard Callebaut Chocolate speaking on “The Wonders of Chocolate”. She also provided samples during her talk and at the break. Barb Murray thanked her on behalf of the membership.


Minutes:
Ann Lawson moved that the Minutes of the General Meeting held September 18, 2015 be approved as circulated on the website. Seconded by Earl King. All in favour.


Treasurer:
In Carolyn Dodd’s absence, Bob Bevis reported the following funds are available at the Coastal Community Credit Union:

  • Chequing account:                   $ 2031.35
  • High Interest account:             $3,657.22

A reminder to members: When making out cheques for membership or Probus activities, please make them out to Probus Club of Nanoose Bay.


Social Convenor:
Ann Lawson reported that the trip on the Uchuck III out of Gold River was a great success, with 21 members and 2 guests participating. The Pacific Rainforest Adventure Tour for the Fall Salmon Run scheduled for Oct. 15 was cancelled because there was not enough interest to make it financially feasible. The company operates out of Parksville, and has a variety of interesting-looking tours, so she might arrange something for another time.

Upcoming Events:

  • Nov. 1 – Lorne Elliott at the Port Theatre for a matinee comedy show, with lunch beforehand
  • Dec. 10 – Christmas party at Fairwinds. Volunteers for organizing committee can contact Ann directly.
  • January 21      free tour booked for 2 pm at the Robert Held Glass Studio in Parksville.

Sunshine:
Jacqui Townsend reported that two get-well cards were sent this month. Please let Jacqui know if you are aware of someone who would appreciate a card.

Jacqui also introduced the “Birthday Board” placed by the name tags which lists all members celebrating birthdays that month, so that we can congratulate them or commiserate with them during the meeting break.


Special Interest Groups: Anne Larson called on leaders to comment on their group activities. Book Clubs #1 and #2 and the Men’s Book Club have meetings planned.

  • Both Bridge Clubs are active.
  • Mah Jong meets on Mondays
  • The Computer Club will meet in October to discuss both Windows 10 and IOS 9.
  • Pat Sali has taken over the management of the Book & DVD exchange.
  • The Walking Club is going to Yellow Point on Oct 21.
  • The Hiking Club has no hike planned for this month. The leaders of the group are looking for someone to help with the organization of the monthly hikes.
  • The Garden Club is planning a trip to the Hazlewood Herb Farm Sat Oct 17 and Saturday, November 14th at 10 a.m. They are also participating in Greenthumb Nurseries workshop on winterizing your garden. Greenthumb is also holding Christmas Decorating workships on Saturday, November 28th: centerpieces at 10 a.m. and wreaths at 1 p.m. I Cost is$16.00 for each workshop. We can arrange a lunch between the two workshops. Please let Ann Willams know if you are interested.
  • The Photo Club has a new slide show on YouTube.
  • Les Wineaux is organizing an event for December at the Beach Club, dinner with wine pairings.
  • The next Dinner Theatre event is Oct 27 – Grace and Glorie. The Christmas Theatre event is Elf: the Musical on Dec 6.

Communication:
Ron Windrim reported that all is well with the Website, and usage numbers are high. He thanked everyone for providing him with the information required to keep it current. The Website address is nbprobus.org


Membership:
Alida Sali reported that Membership is full, with 15 people on the waiting list. Membership Renewal Forms can be downloaded from the Website and should be filled out and sent to Alida along with a cheque made out to Probus Club of Nanoose Bay. Cheques are due by the end of December, so please remember to look after this task before going away for winter vacation.

New members have roses on their nametags, which are removed after a year. Please make sure to introduce yourselves and welcome our new members.
