Guest Speaker: Mike Durnin introduced our guest speaker, Dom Lassonde, Canadian Military Pilot, whose topic was “Chapter 1 Flying: Chapter 2 Illness and Uncertainty. As a young boy, Dom wanted nothing more than to fly airplanes, and set his goal to join the military. His first attempt was rejected because he needed to complete several high school subjects; he accomplished that in record time, and was accepted. His determination saw him through many months of intense training, including Formation Flying at the Nato Flight Training Centre Headquarters in Moosejaw. He flew Arctic patrols based in Yellowknife and in Comox in a search and rescue role. Unfortunately, in 2013 Dom was finally diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis after more than 2 years of constant pain, and was no longer able to fly with the military. During a period of remission, Dom took a 6-week simulator course in order to regain his license for commercial flying, and flew briefly with Westjet. But he was in and out of remission, and is now on long term disability. RA has no cause and no cure, and Dom wants to help raise awareness of research into this disease.
Mike thanked Dom for his impassioned and humerous presentation.
