Minutes of the General Meeting of the Probus Club of Nanoose Bay

St. Mary’s Church Hall

Friday, April 20th, 2018

 

Welcome:       Kathy Lowe in the chair welcomed everyone to the meeting at 9:15 am.

Members with Guests:  3 guests were introduced this morning.

 Announcements:   Kathy Lowe thanked Melba & Bob Nelson for setup and door duties and Kerstin & Borge Fredricksson and Jean & David Russell for kitchen duties.
An announcement was made for kitchen duty volunteers needed for the June 22nd , 2018 general meeting – subsequently 3 volunteers have been found.

 Minutes:  Maureen Paterson moved that the Minutes of the last General Meeting held on Friday, March 16, 2018 be approved as posted on the website – Bob Nelson seconded – carried 

Sunshine:        Lynda Ingram reported that one card was sent out in April.
                             Members with April birthdays were recognized.

 Communications:  Ann Lawson not present – no report.

Membership:  Ron Commander reported that we have 203 members and 5 on the waiting list. Five new members were introduced and given their badges.

                       

Special Interest Groups: The various leaders of the groups gave their reports and future plans.

            Some notables were:  Nine and Dine sign up sheet on the table
 Dinner Theatre sign up sheets on the table 
Tech – Know Club had a interesting meeting this month with the “Geek Squad” from Best Buy who showcased a lot of the new products available.

Social Activities:  Andree Fortin spoke to the membership regarding the summer picnic to be held at the Rotary Welch Park in Qualicum Beach  on Friday July 20th – there was show of hands in agreement to use a caterer and to pay a little extra if need be.  By show of hands there was also an approximation of the usual number who plan to attend the picnic- Andree will now get quotes from caterers. Committee meeting for the picnic will be held in May. Sign up sheet to attend the picnic will be on the table next general meeting and online.

Andree gave an outline of a proposed day trip to the Cowichan Bay area on September 12th.  The cap for this outing will be set a 25 people.  The day trip consists of a visit to the Van Valley Dairy Farm (a robotic dairy operation) in the morning and then tour the Westholme Tea Farm in the afternoon.  Costs and full details and sign up sheet will be available at the June general meeting.

Jean Russell and Sharon Vincent spoke to the membership regarding the upcoming Quadra Island trip – it is fully booked (with a wait list)  – there will be a meeting regarding this trip at the Craig Bay rec centre on Sunday April 29th at 7p.m. – options regarding golf, kayaking, dinner etc. will be discussed.  Sharon Vincent has some sign up & info sheets for those not able to attend the meeting.

 Treasurer:  Randy Borger reported that as of April 20th, 2018 funds available at CCCU are:

                        High Interest Account:  $3,692.23

                        Chequing Account:        $4,776.02

 Guest Speaker:  Peter Milne introduced our guest speaker:  Bryun Harvey Assistant Manager of Costco Nanaimo. Bryun has been with Costco for the past 18 years and with Costco Nanaimo since 2007.   He gave a thoroughly informative and entertaining presentation outlining Costco’s mission to have quality goods at a low price.  He outlined Costco’s commitments to its members, employees, shareholders and the community.  There were interesting facts regarding the Nanaimo store and  lots of questions and answers. The membership was most appreciative of this interesting presentation.

Pub Lunch:    Jean Candey announced today’s lunch will be at The Black Bear in Nanaimo

Final Announcements:  Jacquie Townsend mentioned the Eldercollege speaker about technology – April 21st at the Community Centre.

Carolyn Dodd spoke about finding “Treasures” on May 5th at the Grandmothers to Grandmothers event.

Jean Russell reminded the membership of the St Mary’s Church bottle drive April 28 to raise money for a new kitchen for the church.
