Cumberland Mine Tour and Lunch

Cumberland Mine Tour and Lunch

We had a grand group of 33 members for the Cumberland  day excursion. The day began with a beautiful sunrise.  Many of us carpooled to Cumberland and arrived before our 9:30am private museum tour so we could also make a quick stop at The Village Bakery for a much anticipated fresh donut and coffee!  The weather, once again, cooperated last minute remaining cool and mostly dry.

Our Cumberland Day Trip Included:

A Group Tour of the Cumberland Museum was conducted by a very passionate & knowledgeable Director Ms. Rozzlyn Shipp (resident of Nanoose Bay). We were all  very impressed by the modern, bright and well-laid-out multi-faceted collection. The museum had been renovated in 2016. Many of us promised to be back.

Our group split into two groups for lunch-half going to the Kingfisher Resort with Melba and Bob Nelson in Royston, and half  going to Cumberland’s historic Waverley Pub with Barb and Patrick Murray, along with Wendy Hayes.

Many of the people staying for the pub lunch had an hour to walk down to visit the site of the Mine No. 6 monument and park dedicated to the 65 miners killed in a tragic explosion Feb 15, 1901, and then walk down the road to an area of the historic miner village  called the ‘Camp’ area in Cumberland.  There was even time to stroll along the main street to window shop and check out a few stores.

The lunch menu was varied & interesting and served very efficiently by our wait person.  By all accounts everyone enjoyed their selections!

Report from Melba on our Kingfisher Lunch:

As we approached the Kingfisher Oceanside Resort and Spa we were in  awe of a tree full of pink blossoms. It wasn’t long on our stroll through the gardens we discovered that although most of the plants were artificial, the vibrant colours were a welcome sight this time of year. The gardens and restaurant have a wonderful view of the ocean, as do the accommodations. Everyone enjoyed a delicious brunch and spending time with old friends and new.
