We met at Jane C’s to discuss Norwegian by Night, an original and brilliant debut novel by Derek B. Miller. It’s the story of a 82 year old Jewish US ex-marine widower who leaves NY to move to Norway to live with his granddaughter. He is plunged into culture shock and then heroically rises to the challenge of saving a young Albanian refugee boy whose mother has been murdered. Serious themes of love, loss, bravery, loyalty, grief, war trauma, aging, dementia are combined and conveyed – in a surprisingly hilarious book.
