Book Club 2nd Edition

We met Wed. Aug. 31 at the Rockinghorse Pub, hosted by Ann Lawson, to discuss “The Essex Serpent” by British author Sarah Perry. Perry is able to weave into her story’s Gothic frame two very different aspects of 19th century cultural life:  the burgeoning field of natural science , with Darwin’s evolutionary theory spurring interest in palaeontology and  geology; and the fraught areas of Christian belief, which seemed challenged by such scientific developments.   Some members also enjoyed the film version, available on Apple TV.
