Welcome:
Ron Windrim took the chair in the absence of Anne Larson

Announcements:

  • Ron thanked Bob and Melba Nelson for handling set-up and door duties.
  • Thanks as well to the Catering Crew Kerstin and Borje Fredricksson and Norma Dechene.
  • Ron requested volunteers for upcoming catering duties and will circulate the volunteer list.

Minutes:
Bev Watson moved that the Minutes of the General Meeting held on April 15, 2015 be approved as circulated on our website. Seconded. All in favour.


Treasurer:
Carolyn Dodd reported on the financial status of the Club. Funds available in the Coastal Community Credit Union accounts are as follows:

  • Credit Union Savings Account $3,669.20
  • Credit Union Chequing Account $3,889.85

Social Convenor:
In the absence of Ann Lawson, Helen Stuart will lead the group on the Stubbs Island trip.

Also in the absence of Ann, Ron announced the June 16th trip to the Comox Valley for a brewery tour and July 15 is the summer picnic at Rathtrevor Beach. Details and sign-ups are on the web site.


Sunshine:
Phyllis Horne reported that no cards had been sent out and also mentioned the birthday list and to check if any of your friends were having birthdays this month.


Special Interest Groups:
Ron Windrim called for leaders to comment on their group activities.

  • ABBA –The next meeting is the second Tuesday in June at the Sali’s, after which ABBA will break for the summer and commence again in September.
  • Book Club 1 – The next book is “Us Conductors” and will meet at Carolyn Collyer’s
  • Book Club 2 – Is reading “Orphan Train” and will meet at the home of Leslie Horseman
  • Book and DVD Exchange – Pat Sali said some of the books have been around for a long time and are no longer moving, and asked for an infusion of new books.
  • Bridge Afternoon – Is going great, check the web site.
    Bridge Evening – no comments made
  • Concert Club & Live Classics – this is new and there was no one available to make a comment
  • Computer Club– Suspended for the summer , will resume the 2nd or 3rd Thursday of September
  • Dinner Theatre – Attendance is dropping and had to be cancelled for the last play due to insufficient sign ups. The next production is “Footloose” on July 10th.
  • Garden – May 29 is the Ladysmith Garden Tours. End of June is a Cowichan tour. Anne is still looking for a replacement to take over the leadership of this group.
  • Hiking – Had a successful hike to Heart Lake. There will be a hike in June but the destination is currently undecided.
  • Les Wineaux – Their next gathering will be a sit down meal broken into 3 sections with two on May 28 and one June 11. The theme will be South America.
  • Mah Jongg – New cards have been purchased and all is going well.
  • Men’s Book Club – The next meeting is at Bill MaCachen’s to discuss “All the Light We Can Not See”.
  • Movie Night – there was no one to comment
  • Photography Club – Had two meetings, one for a Nanaimo Evening Photo Shoot and a second meeting to share the results. At 16 members the club is at capacity and unable to take any new members.
  • Walking Group – This week was cancelled but next week is a go. Just show up at Nanoose Place if you are interested. All information is on the web site.
  • TED Discussion group – Meets on the 4th Thursday. This month’s discussion was “what happens when computer are smarter than us”. Next month will be “genetically altered foods” at the home of the King’s.

Membership:
Alida Sali reported that our membership is full, with 12 people on the waiting list. Wayne Newport was presented with his name badge.


Communications
Robyn Arnold asked everyone to please communicate their summer activities to her. She also did a survey of how many watched Netflix and You Tube.


Guest Speaker:
Chris Boar, who is passionate on all things Astrological and Scientific, from the Nanaimo Astronomical Society spoke on “The Search for Longitude” A 40 year tale of Perseverance, Political Interference, International Warfare, Academic Backstabbing, and the birth of British Astronomy” He was introduced and thanked by Bill McCachen.


Pub Lunch:
Is at Cuckoos in Coombs, arranged by Helen Stuart and Jane Juba.


Attendance: Total 64 – 60 Members, and 4 Guests.


Final Announcements:
Our June Speaker is Robert Bateman. Therefore we have moved the venue to Nanoose Place in order to accommodate a larger audience. Members may bring a guest if they wish.. We will have our regular meeting from 9:15-9:45 followed by a refreshment break. Members of the Northwest Bay Probus club will join us at 10:00 for the presentation.

There were some questions about numbers, catering and guests. Ron Windrim volunteered to set up a RSVP system so we could get an idea of numbers for catering.

Next Management Meeting:
Thursday, June 2, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the home of Anne Larson.
