Seven probus members took to the head waters of the Cowichan River at Lake Cowichan on Monday, August 28th. The Tube Shack staff were very helpful and there was a choice of tubes to choose from. We entered the water at 1:30pm and once we practised with the provided paddle, we were off.
The day was cloudy but the water was warm for the 2.5 hr float. For the first bit we pontooned together, chatting and taking in the view and then broke way to float at our leisure. It was interesting to see the various homes along the route. We experienced two brief showers along the way but the weather held. The day was cloudy but the water was warm for the 2.5 hr float. Several groups were floating that afternoon which was part of the entertainment but it was not crowded. Towards the end of the float the river picked up speed in places and included some small rapids (Fun). Because of low water some of us got stuck on rocks but managed to rock ourselves to freedom.
As we exited the river the skies opened and heavy rain began. Luckily the shuttle van was there waiting. As we all piled into the van, we were greeted by the driver who thankfully had the heaters blasting.
Arriving back in Lake Cowichan, we changed from soggy swimsuits into warmer clothing and headed to Jake’s At The Lake for refreshments and dinner. Over delicious meals we chatted, becoming more acquainted with one another.
Meanwhile outside the rain poured down, accompanied by thunder. Should you ever find yourself in Lake Cowichan, I would recommend eating at Jake’s. By the time we left the restaurant the weather had improved. All in all, it was fun to experience a new activity in beautiful surroundings. I think that this activity should happen next summer so that more Probus members can get involved. We all agreed that it was the best $20.00 we ever spent!
